by Byron Rogers - Some opportunities never repeat themselves, and so may be the case with the daughters of Better Than Honour.

The offspring of the Broodmare of the Year Better Than Honour have been sold through a sales ring a total of just eight times, with the average price falling a few dollars shy of $1 million. This figure speaks to both the scarcity of her offspring appearing in the sale ring, and the outstanding performance of the offspring of this blue hen mare on the racetrack and in the breeding shed.

Such value is always well earned and generally stands the test of time. Of the twenty five runners to currently descend within three generations of Better Than Honour, six have already won at stakes level with three of these – Rags to Riches, Jazil and Streaming – proving successful at the highest level. This success is generational in the case of Better Than Honour, a grade two winner and Grade One placed, as she represents the third generation of mares producing at least three graded stakes winners at stud. Her dam Blush With Pride and grand dam Best In Show both proved outstanding producers and there are no less than thirty five Grade One winners and 144 stakes winners to come from the Best in Show family including the leading sires El Gran Senor, Spinning World and Redoute’s Choice. It is rare to see a family of such continued high class production.

With her daughter Teeming, having already produced two stakes winners, one of which has won at Grade One level, there is already a precedent for a lightly raced daughter of Better Than Honour to prove successful at stud which speaks to the opportunity that her daughter Tiffany’s Honour represents to a breeding program. This four year old mare is by the international sire Street Cry, a stallion who has already proven himself as a broodmare sire with no less than 15 stakes winners out of his daughters to date.

The unnamed two year old daughter of Better Than Honour is by the high class sire Bernardini whose performance and pedigree, being by Champion A.P Indy out of a grade one winner in Cara Rafaela, sets him up as a broodmare sire of the future. This filly is of course a three quarter sister to the Champion Rags to Riches and bred on the same cross as To Honor and Serve, Got Lucky, Angela Renee and Telling.

There are no less than 17 daughters and grand-daughters of Better Than Honour that find themselves tightly held in the hands of some of the most highly respected breeders in the world that are being bred to some of the true breed shaping stallions of our industry. As hard as it is to imagine, there is no doubt that the Better Than Honour branch of the Best in Show family should increase in the production of high class runners in years to come and prove to be one of the most lucrative maternal lines in the sale ring and on the racetrack. Two young daughters, both by outstanding proven sires, represent a unique opportunity for any breeder hoping to compete at the highest level.
