by Byron Rogers - The great bloodstock researcher Joe Estes proved that the racing class of a mare was the first and most obvious indicator that a mare could be a good producer. History has also shown us that racing class is not just defined by running the fastest time on the day, but who a horse beats in doing it and where it is done.

In the storied history of Saratoga Race Track, only three fillies that have shown both the precocity and speed required to win the Spinaway Stakes (gr.I) at two, and return at three to win the Test Stakes (gr.I) at the same track – Moccasin, Numbered Account and Sweet Reason, with the latter proving to be the only one of the triumvirate to also win the Acorn Stakes (gr. I) over a mile.

A brilliant two year old on the racetrack, at stud Moccasin produced nine foals, of which seven won graded stakes races. Her son Apalachee was named Champion 2-year-old in England and Ireland in 1973 and became a successful sire while another son, Belted Earl also raced in Europe and was named Champion Older Male and Champion Sprinter in Ireland in 1982. Equally as brilliant on the racetrack, Numbered Account was also successful at stud producing the Grade One winners Private Account and Dance Number and in time proving to be a blue hen mare for her owners and those breeders lucky enough to find their way into this family with the likes of Super Saver, Rhythm, Bluegrass Cat, Imagining, Girolamo, Frost Giant, Callback and Got Lucky all descending from this fine mare.

Sweet Reason has both the pedigree and racetrack performance to follow in the footsteps of these two outstanding mares. By the Kentucky Derby winner and successful sire Street Sense, a son of Street Cry, Sweet Reason is out of a stakes placed mare by the Champion Sprinter Mr. Livermore, providing a blend of both speed and stamina that affords her plenty of options in the breeding shed. Both Moccasin and Numbered Account were out of mares that produced more than one stakes winner in their careers and Sweet Reason again shares this similarity being a half sister to the Grade 3 and Grade 1 placed Don’t Forget Gil. In her race career Sweet Reason broke her maiden at first asking by a widening 6 ¼ lengths and subsequently met and defeated no less than 10 graded stakes winners over her career including the Grade One winners Stopchargingmaria, Unbridled Forever, Artemis Agrotera and Fashion Plate.

Sweet Reason represents an outstanding opportunity for a breeder to own a rare talent – one that was both precocious at two and brilliant at three, that performed at the highest level at the strongest meet in America. Such mares are rare, and the history of mares that have gone before that have done this point to her undoubted potential as a broodmare of considerable note.
